The Goody Girls Team was founded in 1978. Originally we were a chili cook-off team but after a few years that changed and we became an all around BBQ Team.
The team started out with 11 members - all women, and the original sponsor was General Oil Distributing, Inc. Hence the team was named The Goody Girls. Actually, at that time the team name was spelled The GODI Girls. We like to joke that we didn't know how to spell at that point, but somewhere along the way we did learn how to spell.
The founding team consisted of:
Shirleen BakerMarilyn BlairSherrie DavisGeorgia Dunn"D" LouvierJo Ann O'RourkeBrenda ParishCharlotte RussellSusie SmithCarol StephensonKaren "Ducky" Walker
The first Cook-Off the team participated in was the Humble Lions Club Chili Cook-Off. The Team ended up starting what has since become a long-standing tradition, and that is winning! Of course, we don’t ALWAYS win, but we certainly have taken home our fair share of trophies. Currently the team competes annually at The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s World Championship BBQ Cook-Off. In the last ten years we have managed to consistently be in the top ten of the final rankings at the HLS&R World Championship BBQ Cook-Off. Below is a list of our latest rankings at that Cook-Off:
1997 – HLS&R Championship Brisket
2001 - HLS&R 2nd Runner-up Brisket
2002 - HLS&R Championship Brisket (Overall 2nd Runner-up)
2004 – HLS&R Championship Brisket and Overall Grand Champion
2005 - HLS&R 1st Runner-up Ribs
2006 - HLS&R Championship Brisket
2007 - HLS&R 2nd Runner-up Brisket
In 2002 the World BBQ Association invited the Goody Girls to compete at the Gold Star International Cook-off in Switzerland and we had the 1st place finish in Chicken.
Don’t get us wrong though, as much as we like turning out a good BBQ we are also very much involved in our local community. In 1998 we became a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization under the Internal Revenue Code and made it our mission to give back to the community. Since that time we have donated approximately $200,000.00 to various charities. In 2007 alone we donated right at $50,000.00 to several different charities which included The Muscular Dystrophy Association, HLS&R Educational Fund, The Linda Lorelle Scholorship Fund, The AG Mechanics, and we also sponsored several HLS&R Calf Scramble Winners.
